History:
DAIS
was founded in 1999 by Camar Robinson (Dalton School), Katiria Calderon (Marymount School of New York), Natalya Davis (Chapin
School), and Kimberly Marable (Packer Collegiate Institute) with the help of a number of students from all over
the greater New York City area. Modeled after its predecessor, the Diversity Resource Collaborative, the four students
spearheaded efforts towards planning what would be the annual Multicultural Student Leadership Conference. In the following
year, the students expanded the organization to include monthly meetings where students not only discussed issues of diversity
and civil rights, but honed their facilitation and leadership skills, and created bonds with students from other schools.
Now
in its 11th year, DAIS is still going strong with members hailing from all five boroughs, Westchester, and even Connecticut.
Monthly meeting and conference attendance has quadrupled. Students have brought what they have learned from their
peers, back to their own schools, hosting Diversity Days and a variety of other programs that allow fellow students, faculty,
parents, and administration to help maintain an environment of diversity and tolerance.
With adult guidance and supervision, everything about DAIS is, and continues to be STUDENT RUN!
DAIS Mission Statement:
The Diversity Awareness Initiative for Students, DAIS,
is an organization dedicated to strengthening our schools and ourselves, through increased knowledge, awareness, and respect
for different cultures. Its members are comprised of students from independent, public, and parochial schools, who wish
to discuss and improve human relations within the community and society at large.

Leadership Opportunities
Executive
Committee: Rep Your School!
This committee consists of student representatives from each High School, and meets monthly, to plan each month's
General Meeting (which is facilitated by EC members), and aid in preparing the annual conference. Membership in this committee is loose, whereas there is no formal DAIS election required, although
schools are encouraged to elect the best candidate to "rep your school."
Core Leadership: Lead the Org!
This committee
consists of a maximum of 7 students elected by the general student membership at the beginning of each school-year. Core
Leaders meet monthly, prior to the Executive Committee meetings, and separately from the general student
meetings. Their duties include
facilitating Executive Committee meetings, planning the monthly general meetings, and coordination of the annual conference
theme and workshops.
